Another technological first for Eye Consultants of Texas

We are excited to announce that we are the first practice in Dallas/Fort Worth, and Texas, to commercially acquire the Verion™ Image Guided System. The Verion is a fairly recent advancement used in refractive, or “laser-assisted,” cataract surgery. It starts to work at the planning phase to help the surgeon optimize accuracy and efficiency throughout the entire procedure.

Many experts see refractive cataract surgery as a potential game changer. The Verion is designed to help optimize the entire refractive procedure for even better results.

Basically, the Verion creates a detailed map of the eye’s unique features. This is done before cataract surgery, to provide data that allows for more precise placement of the intraocular lens during surgery.

To break this down further, the Verion works this way: A high-resolution image is taken of the patient’s eye, mapping out important details and measurements. This “map” is used by Dr. Labor to more efficiently plan and customize each step of the procedure. The Verion can provide for a more precise incision, as well as for more accurate positioning and alignment of the intraocular lens.

In addition, Dr. Labor can use the Verion in concert with the LenSx® cataract refractive suite and Centurion® Vision System to enhance surgery results even more. These technologies play a specific role related to the basic steps required in cataract surgery: incision, removal of the cataract, and placement of the artificial (intraocular) lens. The LenSx is used for a more precise incision using the femtosecond laser. The Centurion is used for more efficient break up and removal of the cataract. And the Verion helps Dr. Labor efficiently plan and map out the entire procedure.

If you have cataracts or suspect you do, call our office locally at 877-516-4364 to set an appointment. Our team of doctors can further explain if you can benefit from these technologies, and what they can do for you. We’re located just off Highway 114 in Grapevine, convenient to Dallas/Fort Worth.

Take A Walk On The Grass

Take A Walk On The Grass

When is the last time that you took off your shoes and yours socks and you walked barefoot on the grass.  If you’re older than twelve I’m guessing it has been quite some time.  It’s funny, when we’re kids, if we see a mud puddle we JUMP right in it.  When we become adults we walk around the mud puddle.  Not only do we walk around the mud puddle…we complain about it!

Stop complaining.  It’s not really serving you.  Start living.  Get outside and re-connect with our planet.  This isn’t some hippy dippy statement.  We (human beings) are electrical beings.  That’s right, we are electrical beings.  Electricity is constantly flowing through our bodies.   In fact, without electricity you wouldn’t be reading this post right now.  Without electricity running through your body your brain would cease to function.

Sometimes we need to re-charge.  We need to “ground” ourselves.  One of the ways to do this is by getting outside and walking barefoot on the grass.  While you’re walking (barefoot of course) do some deep breathing – you’ll be accomplishing two things at the same time (there is nothing like multi-tasking when it comes to your health).  Walking barefoot on the grass will “ground” you, literally.  Doing this will help you release built up electrical energy that’s in your body.

As stated above, your entire nervous system is run on electrical energy.  Get walking, ground yourself, do your deep breathing, and make some positive changes in your life.  This doesn’t cost you a dime.  What have you got to lose?

Yours In Health!

Changes are Coming to Your Health Savings Accounts

It’s the season of open enrollment for health insurance plans, and if you have an HSA (Health Spending Account – sometimes called a Health Reimbursement or Flex Spending Account), it’s time to max it out! Tax laws have changed, and this coming year, 2012, is the last year that you can place the maximum $5,000 in your HSA. Starting in 2013, the maximum allowed in any Health Savings Account will be $2,500, which means that the entire cost of laser eye surgeries such as LASIK cannot be covered by your HSA pre-tax dollars after 2012.

If you have questions about the coming changes, or if you would like to set up a consultation for LASIK or other laser vision correction procedures, please contact Grochmal Eye Center at (410) 697-4090.

The evolving role of the laser in eye surgery

It’s been quite some time since the laser moved from science fiction to “science truth,” so to speak. Today laser surgery is routine at our Dallas/Fort Worth practice, and more patients seem to be familiar with it than ever before.

The first laser was approved for LASIK eye surgery in 1998. While surgeons still had to use a blade to cut the corneal flap (the first step in LASIK surgery) they were able to use a laser to remove the tissue underneath.

In 2001 the femtosecond laser came along which allowed surgeons to create the corneal flap without a blade. This revolutionized LASIK surgery in that a procedure could be “blade-free” or “all-laser” (a more accurate description according to many doctors today).

LASIK surgery is still performed using a bladed instrument called a “microkeratome.” On average, however, all-laser LASIK has been found to deliver a higher level of accuracy. It has also been found to lessen the risk of complications, such as corneal abrasions or irregular flaps. All-laser surgery can be more expensive, but most LASIK patients find the advantages are well worth it once they’re fully educated as to its benefits and risks.

The laser has now evolved to benefit cataract patients. Specifically, with the more recent development of laser-assisted cataract surgery using the femtosecond laser.

Dr. Labor now uses the first femtosecond laser approved for cataract surgery: the LenSx. The femtosecond laser can help cataract patients enjoy the same types of results LASIK patients have for years. It even allows the procedure to be customized to each eye’s unique features for more accurate, predictable outcomes. Due to its advanced precision, laser-assisted surgery has also been found particularly effective in treating astigmatism.

No doubt, traditional cataract surgery has come a long way in terms of safety, accuracy, precision, and overall outcomes. Like a growing number of practices, we are optimistic that the laser could do for cataract surgery what it did for LASIK surgery.

Are You Turned On?

Are you turned on?…electrically speaking, that is…and I’m not refering to Timothy Leary’s, “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out.”

The other day we talked about how we are electrical beings and that from time to time we need to “ground” ourselves and release some of the static electricity that is built up in our bodies.  I had a couple of people tell me that this is done all the time throughout most of Europe.  I also had a few people who wanted to see learn more about how our bodies operate on an electrical current.

If you’re one of our readers who would like a visual of the body producing electricity in action then this video is for you.

What you are viewing is a group of  four people holding hands and two of the people are holding “hands” with a Ring Around The Rosie Doll.  On each of the dolls hands is a small metal button.  When both of these buttons are touched with bare skin the doll begins to sing.  You will notice in the video that there are a couple of times that the participants let go of the hand of one of their partners…once they do this the doll stops singing.  Once they hold hands again the doll starts to sing.  The doll sings because of the electricity being produced by each participant.

Remember, you are an electrical being…do something good for yourself to recharge your batteries…a nice walk around the block in the evening air is always a simple (and free) thing that you can do to bring in more good energy and release the bad.

Yours In Health!

Case of Rabies follows bite from a puppy

A young man has died of Rabies after being bitten by a puppy – he had played with the dog on campus in Chennai (Madras). His companion, who also played with the puppy, which bit both of them, received anti-rabies treatment following the bite, but he did not.

This highlights the importance of seeking medical help following any bite from a dog, cat, or monkey in any area of the world where rabies occurs.

Be safe – pre-vaccinate against rabies before you travel….

Recovery After LASIK Surgery

Dr. Labor has successfully performed LASIK surgery on patients from across Dallas/Fort Worth. Our LASIK patients come from various walks of life with their own individual careers, backgrounds, and interests. But everyone wants (and deserves) to know about their recovery and how long it will take.

You may have heard that “your eyes are like fingerprints.” You may also be familiar with “eye recognition” as a form of identity verification that’s already in use. Each of your eyes are uniquely complex, and each patient’s needs can vary. In many ways this is why recovery times can vary too. The majority of our LASIK patients tell us they can see better right after surgery. On average, most people see a significant improvement in their vision within the first 2 to 7 days. Generally, it can take between 3 to 6 months for a patient’s vision to fully stabilize.

Recovery can depend on what happens after as well as during the procedure. In other words, following doctor’s orders after surgery matters…a lot. Especially with the eye being such a delicate and important part of every human body. A few important things to remember for after surgery:

Don’t rub your eyes. Every patient hears this right after their procedure. Rubbing the eyes can effect recovery or possibly cause further treatment. Discomfort, sensitivity to light, blurry/hazy vision, or watery eyes are common symptoms, and gradually improve in the first few days. The doctor will often recommend a mild pain reliever to help.

Keep your follow up appointments. These usually start at 24 to 48 hours after surgery, and extend to regular appointments over a few months. During follow up, vision is tested and evaluated at various intervals. Patients are told to avoid the following: non-contact sports 1 to 3 days after surgery; lotions, creams or make up around the eye for up to 2 weeks; strenuous contact sports for at least 4 weeks; and swimming or hot tubs for 1 to 2 months.

What else? LASIK continues to improve in safety and effectiveness, with post-surgery complications rare compared to patients with no complications. If considering LASIK, you should be thoroughly evaluated long before your procedure to make sure you’re a candidate (if not a candidate, there are other effective alternatives). What’s more, your doctor should be up front with you, look after your total health, and do everything possible to ensure optimum results and ease of recovery.

Recovery times, follow up procedures and scheduling may vary depending on severity of eye condition, health, and other factors for patients found to be LASIK candidates. Always confer with a Board Certified eye doctor for information related to your particular condition.

What are Cataracts?

It’s no secret that our eyesight gradually decreases as we age. However, certain conditions may cause the loss of vision to happen more rapidly. Cataracts are a common cause of vision loss, affecting millions of people over the age of 65.

But what exactly are cataracts?

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens within the eye, which can slowly diminish one’s vision. This clouding is caused by a buildup or protein within the lens, and it can become increasingly worse over time. In a healthy eye, the lens is clear and allows light to pass through easily to reach the retina — the light-sensitive tissue located at the back of the eye. Eyes with cataracts, on the other hand, have a cloudy lens which results in blurred vision.

There is no one factor that causes the development of cataracts. However, many eye doctors believe that certain habits, such as smoking, may put a person at risk for developing this condition. Additionally, health conditions like diabetes and overexposure to ultraviolet light have also been linked to the development of cataracts.

Some patients who develop cataracts may experience no symptoms of the condition at all, while many experience blurred or double vision. Other possible signs include frequent prescription changes in contact lenses or eyeglasses, as well as a diminished ability to see clearly at night.

For most patients, treating cataracts will require surgery. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the country today, and offers patients extremely effective results. It is a minimally-invasive procedure, with the main goal of removing the damaged lens from the eye. The damaged lens will then be replaced with an IOL (artificial intraocular lens).

Following this procedure, patients may experience some mild discomfort and itchiness. For several days after, eyes may also be extremely sensitive to light. Fortunately, any discomfort is usually mild and typically lasts only a few days. Patients who undergo this surgery will need to protect their eyes afterwards, and will have to avoid rubbing their eye as they recover.

Guidelines for Protecting Your Eyes This Fall

As the leaves begin to change and the breeze turns a bit chillier, it’s important to prepare your eyes for the autumn weather. Colder conditions and even allergens from foliage can negatively impact your eyes, causing dryness and irritation.

Below are the top five issues that affect eyes during the autumn season, along with tips for how to remedy them:

  1. Harsh Sunlight. Although sunglasses are generally viewed as a summer accessory, they should ideally be worn year-round. They protect the eyes from the bright, glaring sunlight of colder months, and should especially be worn when driving during the daytime. Glasses also shield the delicate eye area from harsh winds, as well as the dust and debris that a strong gust could blow into your face.
  2. Dryness. Cold, static-inducing days can be rough on the eyes, so use a humidifier when indoors to give them a rest from dry outdoor conditions. Hypoallergenic eye creams can be applied to help hydrate the skin around the eyes and prevent it from becoming dry, cracked and itchy. Artificial tears can also be used to provide additional moisture.
  3. Allergies. Autumn’s dead leaves, hayrides and fireplace fumes can trigger allergic reactions. Red, itchy, burning, watery or swollen eyes are common allergy symptoms that can be improved with prescription or over-the-counter antihistamines. Using artificial tears can also help ease the discomfort of eye allergy symptoms.
  4. Heating Vents. Although cold weather can be rough on your eyes, indoor heat can be just as harmful – especially if you wear contact lenses. Indoor heat makes air more dry, which causes your skin’s and eyes’ natural moisture to evaporate faster than usual. Sitting near a heating vent can severely dry out your eyes, so make sure that you remain a comfortable distance away the grate and any other heat source. Drinking plenty of water will also ensure that your skin and eyes stay hydrated and healthy.
  5. Eye Strain. Whether you’ve noticed that it’s getting increasingly harder to read your favorite book when curled up by the fireplace or that you can’t see as well as you used to when driving home because it’s getting dark out sooner and sooner, the end is result is more eyestrain. Your eye doctor will determine if your eye strain is a sign that you need a new prescription or if there is another underlying problem. Be sure to schedule an annual check-up.
