Tick-borne encephalitis continues to be a problem in some areas of western & central Europe, and those taking walking holidays in Europe should be aware of those countries where there is a risk of this serious disease.
It is common in the forest & mountainous regions of Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Poland, & also present in Lithuania, Belarus, Croatia and Slovenia. It is also present in lesser amounts in France, Italy, Norway, Sweden and many other European countries.
The disease is vaccine-preventable, and those going on walking or camping holidays in all the countries mentioned should take precautions against being bitten by ticks, know what to do if bitten & consider vaccination before travel.
