A recent review of many years of data about travellers returning to the UK from abroad with malaria, has resulted in some interesting messages:
- People originating from malarious areas and returning to visit families are the group most likely to import malaria into the UK
- However, the group that is most likely to die from malaria is the holiday makers & tourists who visit malarious areas such as Kenya, Tanzania & The Gambia
- The likelihood of dying from malaria increases with the age of the traveller
- Those travellers presenting for treatment in the winter flu season have an increased risk of serious illness or death
