How to Keep Your Eyes Protected This Summer

With summer rapidly approaching, it’s time to make sure we take the proper precautions.  It’s not only important to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, but our eyes as well.  Since exposure to the sun can be damaging to our eyes, preparation is key in keeping them safe.  So what exactly is the relationship between the sun’s UV rays and our eyes?

Both short-term and long-term sun exposure to the sun can have damaging consequences.  Short-term exposure can cause conditions like photokeratitis, an inflammation of the cornea that can cause eye pain and discomfort — similar to a sunburn.  The effects of long-term sun exposure are much more serious, and can include:

  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration
  • Pterygia, or benign tissue growth
  • Skin cancer near the eyes

How to Protect Your Eyes from the Sun

There are some simple, yet important, steps we can take to help protect our eyes from the sun’s damaging rays.  One of the most crucial steps is simply investing in the right pair of sunglasses.  When looking for a pair of sunglasses, it’s important to make sure that they block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays, as these will offer the greatest amount of protection.  Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can also be an effective way to protect your eyes, as they will cover sun that can sneak in through the top or sides of your sunglasses.  Additionally, it’s important to be aware of the sun’s peak times – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Extra protection is advised during these times, as this is when the sun is the strongest.

It’s also important to remember that just because it’s cloudy outside, doesn’t mean the sun isn’t out.  The sun’s rays can pass through thin clouds, so sunglasses and hats are always important.

Innovator Spotlight: AchieveMint’s Mikki Nasch

Mikki Nasch, CEO of AchieveMint

Mikki Nasch, CEO of AchieveMint

This week in our spotlight series on innovators, we interviewed Mikki Nasch, CEO of AchieveMint.

Nasch has more than 20 years experience in technology startups and growth, and a particular expertise in mobile health. She leads AchieveMint, a platform to encourage and support healthy activity and behavior. AchieveMint also aggregates data to drive recommendations for new applications and activities that are helping users get and stay healthier. The more data you log, the more you will learn. Our interview with Nasch is below.

CTH Blog:
First, please tell us a little about yourself and why you became interested in health and technology.

Nasch:
For most of my career I’ve worked with technology companies and I’ve seen amazing improvements technology can bring. As a nation, we are getting more and more unhealthy. AchieveMint is a way to harness the power of technology to help people get healthier in a positive way; we have mastered influence in marketing to get people to buy what we would like them to buy, focusing all of those smarts on the healthcare challenge will move the needle.

CTH Blog:
Being an entrepreneur must be very rewarding and exciting, but also quite challenging. What is the passion that drives you?

Nasch:
Our nation is on a health decline.  Obesity, disease and chronic pain are all on the rise.  This makes our mission so important — being able to focus all of our experience in the marketing world to solve a meaningful problem really fulfills me. We have proved that this positive support toward health goals helps people achieve them faster and stay committed. That’s what drives me.

CTH Blog:
How did you get into your current field? How long have you been working for this company?

Nasch:
I’ve been working in high technology startups for much of my career. I wanted the opportunity to use technology to help people get healthier. In 2008 I began working in health with Diabetes, and learned that, with a little help, we could massively improve people’s quality of life, and we began designing the system that would be able to facilitate that.  It all goes back to the AchieveMint mission of rewarding people for getting healthier.  You can check out our website at http://www.achievemint.com.

CTH Blog:
What do you think is the most exciting innovation or trend happening in health care right now?

Nasch:
We are at the beginning of what promises to be a disruption in healthcare. Consumers are just getting the opportunity to learn from their own health data, and I see that expanding. Consumers are also being given the opportunity to engage in their health for financial benefits from insurers, giving them more reason to care.

What an empowered consumer could mean to the industry as a whole will be defined over the next few years, but it will not be business as usual. What we are doing is crowdsourcing the data to drive recommendations; AchieveMint users get recommendations about what else they could be doing to improve their health.  This is a microcosm of what will be happening across the board in the coming years on a massive scale.

It’s individualized and data driven. That’s exciting.

CTH Blog:
Describe your vision of the future of health or health care.

Nasch:
I see a future where individuals have evidenced-based data to help them be healthier; where the consumer understands his or her responsibility in improving outcomes, and where the whole community joins in the common goal of improved outcomes.

CTH Blog:
At Kaiser Permanente, we think of “total health” as a combination of mind, body and spirit. What does total health mean to you?

Nasch:
We agree that it’s a combination of mind, body and spirit, but you also have to add social.  How the combination works is nuanced for every individual, and changes much like the seasons – services need to be attuned to understanding the nuance, and be able to adjust.

Please note that Kaiser Permanente does not endorse the organizations or products featured in these discussions.

Huge rise in dengue fever cases in Thailand

There has been a rise in the numbers of dengue fever infections in Thailand, particularly in the southern & north-eastern regions. Whilst the most vulnerable group remains children under 15, tourists to Asia can, & do, contract this nasty virus, spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes.

To reduce your chances of becoming a dengue fever victim, consider covering up towards the late afternoon, when the mosquitoes bite, and apply a good insect repellent to exposed areas of skin.

As the rainy season approaches, the numbers of mosquitoes (and people catching dengue) will rise.

There is no vaccine against dengue.

Memphis Health Center, Inc., (MHC), Inc. & Cocaine Alcohol Awareness Program, Inc., (CAAP), JOINS IN THE WORLDWIDE OBSERVATION OF NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY, JUNE 27, 2013

National HIV Testing Day is held every year on June 27th. It is an opportunity for communities to join together to help raise awareness about the critical need to break the silence on HIV prevention and testing. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, HIV is a crisis in African American communities, threatening the health and well-being of African American men and women across the United States. Still today, African American heterosexual women continue to be far more affected by HIV than women of any other race or ethnicity, and young black gay and bisexual men now account for more new infections than any other group in the United States. We cannot allow this crisis to continue.

Memphis Health Center, Inc. (MHC) will be the host site for a partnered HIV testing event with CAAP, Inc. on Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm at 360 E. H. Crump Blvd, free refreshments and gifts for everyone tested will be available while supplies last. MHC welcomes the opportunity to partner with CAAP, Inc. to provide HIV testing to the community. “Knowledge is power and we want everyone to know their status as early as possible to save lives.” “It is our goal to continue offering HIV testing to our patients and the community at large as a part of our comprehensive service model”, says Willeen W. Hastings, Chief Executive Officer of MHC. Albert Richardson, Executive Director of CAAP, Inc. echoes Ms. Hastings and adds “that by partnering with MHC on this event is a deliberate act of collaboration with an organization that has been a stable resource in the community”. “The connection between HIV, substance abuse and alcohol makes individuals more susceptible to contracting HIV and they are more likely to see the disease progress than those who do not drink or use illicit drugs.”

HIV testing is really important not only for the individual but also for the community, but the first step is asking for the test. We are hopeful that by continuing to bring attention to HIV and addressing the problem, we move one step closer to finding lasting, comprehensive solutions.
Although June 27th is National HIV Testing Day, we see every day as HIV testing day. TAKE THE TEST, TAKE CONTROL.

Google Glass: It’s a Wrap (Up)

By all accounts, the second-ever Center for Total Health tech focus was a great success. We were pleased to welcome a small in-person audience along with more than 80 guests via webcast to discuss the potential of wearable computers to change and improve health care — as well as check out Google Glass in action. (Kaiser Permanente and the Center for Total Health host these conversations to explore ideas and the potential of new technology; there is no implied endorsement by KP or CTH of any participating product or company.)

Center for Total Health Medical Director Ted Eytan, MD, and Executive Director Keith Montgomery kick off the live broadcast.

Center for Total Health Medical Director Ted Eytan, MD, and Executive Director Keith Montgomery kick off the live broadcast.

We had lively audience participation and interaction during the Tech Focus event (see the full chat here), and wanted to highlight a few of the most common and most interesting questions raised.

Availability
Google Glass is not yet widely available to consumers, and we aren’t sure when they will be. For those who are lucky enough to snag a pair (mostly developers), the price tag today is $1,500.

Privacy and Security
Information gathered by this device is not currently encrypted or HIPAA compliant, though this would certainly have to be addressed before Glass could be used in a clinical setting (just like any other device). A few folks asked about privacy – specifically if there’s any way for bystanders to know that Glass is taking photo or video. Such a feature does not exist in the current design, but members of our smart audience suggested that a recording light (not unlike those on video cameras) would do the trick.

Ideas for Use

Antonio Zugaldia and CTH Operations Manager Yen Greene rehearse before the broadcast.

Antonio Zugaldia and CTH Operations Manager Yen Greene rehearse before the broadcast.

Folks tuning into the webcast were not short on ideas for how wearable computers might someday be used to promote health and facilitate care delivery in a clinical setting:

  • Closed captioning or hearing aid for the hearing impaired;
  • Capturing the patient perspective of an office visit;
  • Visualizing veins for blood draws;
  • Promoting healthy behavior and choices by helping the wearer locate nearby farmers markets, parks, and health food stores;
  • Real-time communication between pre-hospital providers, transferring facilities and accepting teams; and
  • Improving safety for cyclists by warning them about cars and pedestrians.

If you have other questions or ideas, we’d love to hear from you in the comments below (or via Twitter – we are @kptotalhealth).

Our First Crystalens Workshop And Brunch A Huge Success

The first Eye Consultants of Texas Crystalens Workshop and Brunch was recently held June 29, 2013 at our Grapevine offices. This was open to anyone who had a Crystalens® intraocular lens (IOL) implant or is considering Crystalens. In addition, area Optometrists who managed Crystalens patients were also invited.

We are very proud that over 50 people attended who were eager to learn how to get the most out of Crystalens implants. What’s more, many of our guests requested that we do this again, and often.

Starting at 10:00 AM, guests were treated to a free brunch. This allowed people from across Dallas/Fort Worth to meet, share experiences, and discuss their common interest in Crystalens. This was followed by Eye Consultants of Texas founder, Phillips Kirk Labor, MD who discussed the importance of eye exercises and other important aspects for improving post-surgery results. Also appearing was his wife, Dr. Penny Labor, a Crystalens patient herself, who discussed her own procedure and post-surgery experiences.

Patty Turknett, one of Dr. Labor’s Crystalens patients in attendance, said of the event:

“Thanks for taking the time to explain our cataract surgery and for providing a testimony for the Crystalens. It was very informative and interesting. I’m inspired to take my glasses off during my work day. When I walked out to my car [after the event], there was a pair of reading glasses on the ground, so someone must have thrown them down! It was a great visual for me to do the same thing literally.”

Dr. Labor is considered one of the top Crystalens surgeons due to the number of successful procedures he has performed. Crystalens is the only FDA-approved accommodative presbyopia-correcting IOL that corrects cataracts and presbyopia (the need for “readers”) – “accommodative” meaning the lens moves naturally with the eye. Extremely effective, Crystalens allows for a more complete range of vision at near, intermediate and far distances than other lenses used today. Recently, manufacturer Bausch & Lomb introduced the TRULIGN Crystalens Toric IOL, which allows for a broader range of vision while correcting astigmatism and presbyopia at the same time. We now offer TRULIGN, which is the first FDA-approved toric lens of its kind.

Look for more information coming about future Crystalens Workshop and Brunch events, as well as the new TRULIGN™ Crystalens Toric IOL. In the meantime, call our office in Grapevine at 877-516-4364 to learn more. We’re conveniently located to both Dallas and Fort Worth.

Encephalitis in India

Seasonal encephalitis has led to 38 deaths so far from this in 2013 – this number will rise as the monsoon weather approaches and there are more mosquitoes. Although not all cases are caused by Japanese encephalitis, travellers can be vaccinated against this strain of encephailitis, which is a most serious disease. Japanese encephalitis is endemic in all countries of the southern and south-east Asia. Travellers should also make sure they sleep under nets, and ‘cover up’ when outside in the hours of dusk & darkness. A good insect repellent should be used on exposed areas of shin.

Baltimore Eye Surgeon Now Performing Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

lasik, eye surgery, baltimore md, eyelid surgery, eye surgeon

Baltimore, MD – According to the Administration on Aging (AOA), persons 65 and older represented nearly 13% of the U.S. population in 2009, and are expected to represent 19% by 2030. The Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that the number of older Americans in the workforce is growing as well. As the population and workforce ages, Baltimore eye surgeon Jay C. Grochmal, MD says his patients that are late stage baby-boomers are under extreme pressure to maintain a high level of performance in the workplace, and portraying a vivacious and youthful appearance is essential to continued success.

While helping patients improve their vision with procedures such as LASIK and cataract surgery is important to success in the workplace, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to help his patients enhance their aesthetic appearance has become an important part of his practice as well. He says this growing demand for increased confidence and a natural-looking enhancement is what led him to the decision to add cosmetic eyelid surgery to his list of procedures: “Our society places such a high value on appearance and equates a youthful look with the likelihood of business and social success. Baby boomers are still very active and productive and a refreshed look can eliminate unwarranted bias in career choices.”

As the number of cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. continues to increase, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to look younger longer is obvious, adding that a tough economy and high unemployment rate further contribute to the stress his older patients must endure. Because he constantly strives to improve patient care while providing the latest and safest procedures, Dr. Grochmal says providing cosmetic treatments for his patients is a result of his original commitment to provide the most effective treatments available to meet any and all needs of his patients: “As the cliche goes now, 50 is the new 40 and 60 is the new 50, and so on. My patients want to look as young as they feel and be able to see well too. Ultimately, we believe providing cosmetic eyelid surgery will improve their chances of success in the workplace.”

About Jay C. Grochmal, MD

After earning his medical degree from the University of Maryland, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal completed his residency while achieving the rank of Chief Resident at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology. In addition to being on staff at some of the leading hospitals in the Baltimore area, Dr. Grochmal has traveled on a number of missions dedicated to improving eye care around the world.

Grochmal Eye Center is located in the Catonsville Professional Center at 405 Frederick Rd., Ste. 102, Baltimore, MD 21228, and can be reached at (410) 697-4090. Dr. Grochmal and his team can also be reached at grochmaleye.com or their Baltimore Eye Care Facebook page.

When are you too old to have LASIK?

We continue to grow in the number of LASIK procedures we perform on patients across Dallas/Fort Worth. The question of age, understandably, is one that comes up often in potential LASIK patients. Starting at the minimum required age of 18, LASIK can generally be performed at any age.

The biggest issues that determines if someone is a LASIK candidate? Eye health and general health. There can’t be any presence of cataracts or glaucoma for example. Additional considerations: a family history of corneal disorders, diabetes or other eye disorders.

As our eyes get older, we’re more likely to develop specific conditions, such as cataracts. This is why LASIK is more commonly performed on patients into their 40’s and younger. LASIK, however, can correct the gradual need for reading glasses (called presbyopia) that’s so common after age 40. This may involve a type of added treatment called “monovision,” which often applies to special cases.

“The main thing to keep in mind is that a surgeon should carefully, and diligently, examine every potential LASIK candidate to see if there will be even the slightest problem,” said Eye Consultants of Texas founder, Phillips Kirk Labor, MD. “This is to get the absolute best results regardless of age.”

In recent years, Baby Boomers have been increasingly requesting LASIK. This generation is living longer, and wanting to look younger is more common than ever before. LASIK can be performed on someone into their 70’s or even older. Again, it all depends on your health and the surgeon who is caring for you.

Please contact our office at 877-516-4364 if you’d like to know more about LASIK or to schedule an appointment to see if you’re a candidate. We’re located in Grapevine, convenient to the entire Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers

Dr. Grochmal has again expanded his services for his patients, now, to include BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers to help soften the fine lines of maturing. He has chosen BOTOX® Cosmetic because of its proven track record and outstanding results. Where BOTOX® Cosmetic is not effective, one will have the option of having Juvederm (a dermal filler) injected to help eliminate more permanently the skin folds around the nose and mouth.

Dr. Grochmal is excited to be able to offer these treatments to complement his already extensive oculoplastic repertoire.   Please call the office for more information,  410-697-4090.

Here’s What People are Saying about our LASIK

We recently released a video featuring testimonials from Eye Consultants of Texas patients who had LASIK performed by Dr. Labor. This follows another video we released last Summer featuring Dr. Labor’s Premium Smart Lens patients from around the Dallas/Fort Worth area. This one, however, was a bit unique in that one of the LASIK patients was interviewed just before her LASIK procedure as well as several months later, and includes footage from her actual surgery. Just like our premium lens video, this one was non-scripted. We wanted our patients to openly and honestly share their experiences – what they felt and expected, as well as how LASIK has impacted their lives.

LASIK surgery has made tremendous strides over the years. The technology continues to gets better, improving precision, surgery time and recovery. In the comfort of our offices, Dr. Labor combines the advanced IFS™ Femtosecond Laser with VISX® technology for an all-laser procedure called iLASIK, designed to increase comfort and safety while achieving the best possible outcome.

Yet no matter how much LASIK surgery advances, the need for genuine “old fashioned” care will never change. Dr. Labor is well-known for his strong devotion to every patient, which is evident in our videos. We are extremely grateful to all patients who have taken the time to share their stories on camera.

KP’s Member Mobile App Gets a Makeover, Inside and Out

Mobile apps that support health continue to be wildly popular among consumers looking for ways to access and track health information and resources.  Today, one health organization — Kaiser Permanente — unveiled a new and improved mobile app for its members that promises improved ease of use and functionality.

KP’s original member app was launched in 2012 and so far has been downloaded 600,000 times.  The app made it possible for users to securely email their doctors, refill prescriptions and check lab results from anywhere with a smartphone.  All of those features continue to be available in the refreshed version.

kp-mobile-app-refresh-340x243-4But this app has definitely had a face lift — most noticeable is the colorful and streamlined interface.  According to Brian Gardner, executive director of KP’s mobility center of excellence — it was purposely designed so that users can find what they are looking for in “the first few swipes” of the app.

According to the press release, the new design works with smartphone technology, greatly improving functionality.  Now when KP members schedule an appointment using the mobile app, that can be saved right to the device’s own calendar.  And on the appointment screen, a map with driving directions is included.  The upgraded interface is also ADA-compliant for the vision and hearing impaired.

The app is available to the 4 million registered users of Kaiser Permanente’s PHR, My Health Manager, on kp.org, and it can be downloaded for free at the Apple App Store.

Top 5 Frequently Asked Questions about Macular Degeneration

It seems inevitable that as we get older, our vision won’t be as sharp as it used to be. What if this is vision loss is more severe, however? It may be age-related macular degeneration, a breakdown of the eye’s macula that affects about 1 in every 2,000 people in the United States. So what exactly does this condition entail?

Macular degeneration occurs when the macula, the small, sensitive, central area of the retina responsible for detailed vision, breaks down. This causes a loss in vision, which, depending on the type, can be gradual or sudden. Despite the growing prevalence of macular degeneration, many patients still aren’t sure what this condition is all about. Read on to find out the answers to some commonly-asked questions!

Top 5 Frequently Asked Questions about Macular Degeneration

  1. What are the symptoms? If you’re suffering from macular degeneration, you may experience straight lines appearing wavy, fuzzy or blurred vision, and certain areas of shadowy vision. If any of these symptoms appear, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your ophthalmologist, as early detection is the key to preventing further vision loss.
  2. Is it preventable? There is currently no way to completely prevent macular degeneration, but there are steps you can take that can potentially reduce your risk. Some researchers believe antioxidants can help, as well as exercise and avoiding smoking, as both can affect your macula.
  3. Are there different types? There are two types of macular degeneration, wet and dry. The most common type seen is the dry form, affecting about 90% of all people with this condition. Dry macular degeneration involves the buildup of yellowish deposits beneath the retina, while the wet form involves the growth of blood cells beneath the retina. These blood cells leak, causing cells in the retina to die and leading to blind spots in our central vision.
  4. Am I at risk? The main cause of macular degeneration is natural deterioration due to aging, mostly affecting those over the age of 65. It can also be genetic, and people who are obese, smokers, have high blood pressure, and have prolonged exposure to the sun are at a higher risk.
  5. What are my treatment options? While there is currently no cure for macular degeneration, there are a number of different treatment options designed to stop or slow down the process. Eye injections like Avastin and Lucentis can aid in stopping wet degeneration, and some believe in the efficacy of vitamin and mineral supplements. It’s important to consult with your doctor, as they will be able to discuss and choose the treatment options that are best for you.

Cataracts | Triggers and Treatment

While it’s normal for our eyesight to start to decline when we get older, there are certain conditions that can make that happen much more quickly.  Cataracts are an incredibly common cause of vision loss, affecting over half of all Americans over the age of 65.  So what exactly are cataracts, and what are the treatment options available?

Triggers

A cataract is the clouding of our eye’s natural lens, and is typically brought about due to aging – though it is not considered a normal part of the aging process.  This clouding is a result of protein buildup in the lens, and can worsen over time.  In a normal eye, the lens will be clear, allowing light to pass through it and reach the retina, or the light-sensitive tissue in the back of eye.  In eyes that have developed cataracts, the lens is cloudy, causing vision to become blurred.  While is there no definitive evidence on what causes cataracts, researchers believe there are certain risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, and prolonged ultraviolet light exposure.

As cataracts develop, patients initially may not experience any symptoms.  However, this condition is progressive and with time, patients may experience hazy or blurred vision, reduced vision at night and in bright light, double vision, frequent prescription changes in eyeglasses or contact lenses, and yellowish vision.  As these symptoms can worsen over time, this leaves many patients wondering what their treatment options are.

Treatment

The standard treatment for cataracts is cataract surgery; the most commonly performed surgical procedure in the US.  With a success rate of over 90%, this is a strong option for patients whose cataracts have begun to interfere with their daily life.

A minimally-invasive procedure, cataract surgery works to remove your eye’s damaged lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens, known as an IOL.  Your surgeon will make a small incision in the eye, and insert a thin ultrasound probe that works to break up the cataract.  Following this, the cloudy lens will suctioned out and replaced with the intraocular implant.  The entire procedure is typically painless, performed in under an hour, and can help you once again achieve clear vision.  It’s important to always talk to your surgeon before your procedure, as there are a number of factors that need to be discussed — including the type of IOL you want, and any surgical risks.

Who Made the U.S. News Annual Top Hospitals Rankings?

Today, U.S. News & World Report came out with their annual list of the nation’s top hospitals.  Facilities ranking near the top of a minimum of six out of 16 specialties (e.g., cancer, neurosurgery) make the 2013-2014 honor roll, and after evaluating almost 5,000 medical centers, 18 made that cut.  This year, Johns Hopkins was named number one overall, followed by Mass General in the number two spot.

In addition to the overall rankings, the report also rates medical centers in most states and in major metropolitan regions (all U.S. regions with at least 500,000 in population).  Several Kaiser Permanente facilities in California and Hawaii were recognized in these rankings, as called out in this press release.

According to its website, U.S. News primarily uses objective data on hospital performance, such as patient survival rates, and structural resources, such as nurse staffing levels as a basis for rankings. Each hospital’s reputation, as determined by a survey of physician specialists, is also a factor determining each hospital’s rankings.  An FAQ on the ins and outs of the ranking process can be found here.

For patients under 18 and their caregivers, U.S. News published a separate Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll and rankings in 10 pediatric specialties last month.

The Value of Being an Engaged Patient

It’s easy to wonder, especially when we are sick or dealing with a health issue, if we are doing all we can to be our own best health advocate.

This Thursday, U.S. News and World Report will host a TweetChat about patient engagement featuring Kaiser Permanente physician Ted Eytan, MD.

Dr. Eytan (@tedeytan on Twitter), physician director here at the Center for Total Health for The Permanente Federation, will join a panel of experts to talk about a patient’s role in his or her own hospital and health experience. Panelists will discuss how patients can empower themselves to remain informed and engaged in their treatment.

Expected topics include patient empowerment regarding electronic health records, having candid conversations with one’s doctor, knowing how to maximize medical appointments, and knowing what questions to ask.

The TweetChat will take place Thursday, July 25, from 2 to 3 p.m. Eastern time (11 a.m. to noon Pacific). Follow the hashtag #PatientChat to participate in the conversation.
